2008 Beijing Paralympic Gold Medallist Katrina Porter and Australian Team Coach Mel Tantrum

Mel Tantrum is a High Performance Swim Coach with an ASCTA Gold Licence Accreditation.

Recent contracts include a High Performance position at The University of Western Australia coaching some of the World’s best open water swimmers and triathletes. Mel coached three swimmers at the 2013 FINA World Championships in Barcelona.

Mel worked with West Coast Swimming Club in Perth from 1998 to 2011. Mel started her affiliation with Grant Stoelwinder and West Coast in 1998. At that time, West Coast was in the B-grade Pennant competition in Western Australia and had 3 swimmers competing at the National Championships. A decade later, Mel completed her Gold Licence Coaching Accreditation and was appointed Head Age Group Coach for the 2007 Australian Age Championships. Under Mel’s leadership and with support from the team of West Coast coaches, West Coast won Champion Club at the 2007 Australian Age Championships. West Coast won the A Grade Premiership competition for 9 consecutive years from 2001 to 2009. Mel is a Life Member of West Coast Swimming Club.

In 2008, Mel Tantrum coached Katrina Porter to two World Records and a Gold Medal as well as finalist Jeremy McClure at the Beijing Paralympic Games. She also assisted Tommaso D’Orsonga’s selection on to the Australian Team for the 2009 FINA World Championships Team.

More recently, Mel coached Rhys Mainstone to his first FINA 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup win in Hong Kong and coached Kane Radford (NZL), Yasunari Hirai (JPN) and Mainstone to the FINA World Swimming Championships in Barcelona. In 2014, Mainstone, Radford and Charlotte Webby (NZL) all qualified for the Pan Pacific Championships and Sacha Downing qualified for the Junior Pan Pacs.
